TableTopStudio teams up with world-renowned Brooks Institute of Photography for a special two-day workshop devoted to jewelry photography. The next jewelry photography workshop will be held on July  12th & 13th at the Brooks Institute of Photography facilities located in beautiful Santa Barbara, California.

July 12 & 13th 2008
Saturday and Sunday, 9AM to 5PM
$375
Instructor - Scott Miles
Brooks Institute of Photography

This is a unique opportunity to receive hands-on instruction in the art of jewelry photography. The workshop will focus on using a digital camera to create professional looking images of various types of jewelry.  As you have probably discovered, jewelry can be more challenging than other types of product photography. So the workshop will look at how to deal with glare on shiny surfaces, supporting the subject, and controlling focus.
Among the topics to be covered:
  • Creating the “Tiffany Effect”

  • Eliminating glare while keeping the shine

  • Special lighting for faceted stones

  • Dramatic reflections made simple with “Black Ice”

  • Supporting subjects with “invisible” wire

We will see what the workshop participants are most interested in covering at the beginning of the session and concentrate on those. Participants are encouraged to bring some of their own pieces to be used as possible subjects in the workshop. All lighting equipment will be provided, but it is advisable to bring your own camera and tripod.

The workshop will use simple setups with inexpensive lighting equipment.

We should be able to shoot at least six of the following types of jewelry:

  • Diamond jewelry (a diamond engagement ring would be a good subject)

  • Beads (Beads are very big right now and many of them are quite nice)

  • Sterling silver (either plain or with opaque stones like turquoise)

  • Watches

  • Pearls

  • Rhinestone/Swarovski glass jewelry

  • Loose gemstones

  • Colored gemstone jewelry (sapphire, emerald, amethyst, etc)

Participation is limited so register as soon as possible. Please email  suzanne@tabletopstudio.com if you have questions after visiting the Brooks registration site.
